The following is an excerpt from our new Mobile Monitor report titled iPad and Tablet Apps: The Future of Mobile? available now.
American Express launched its tablet apps – for both the iPad and Android – in October 2011. This made them one of the first credit card issuers with an iPad app and the first financial institution Corporate Insight tracks with an app optimized for Android tablets. The firm maintains a spacious, uncluttered design across the two tablet apps, with effective card management tools, a strong mobile platform.
Once logged into the app, clients arrive at an account overview screen that combines balances, recent activity and a small promotion. The left side of the screen lists balances – outstanding, last statement, recent payments, credits and charges, rewards points – with links to the app’s Pay Bill tool and Membership Rewards gift card redemptions. The bottom of the column presents a small promotion that opens in the device’s browser.
The right side of the account overview presents a sortable, searchable transaction history. The top of the panel offers Date and Amount sorting, either ascending or descending, along with a keyword search field. Clients can select a transaction to load full details in the left panel. Unfortunately, the transaction history only goes back three months, shorter than online and no longer than the firm’s other mobile apps. If clients have multiple cards, they can activate a selection screen that presents a card icon and balance and payment information.

The app’s main transaction capability is to pay the card bill. The interface takes the whole screen for just three inputs, giving a spacious feel. Clients can select a date, bank account and amount – minimum payment, outstanding balance or other amount.

Eligible clients can also redeem Membership Rewards points for gift cards through the app as well. Clients can select from dozens of merchants, choose denominations and quantities, and check out. The app also offers strong help and customer service features. In addition to FAQs, the app presents a Quick Start Guide that shows a sample screen with callouts for key features. There is also a full Contact Us screen that includes various telephone numbers and a link to @AskAMEX on Twitter.
