Corporate Insight’s Around the Industry blog series reviews public websites and digital resources offered by leading financial services firms that fall outside of our Monitor Services coverage groups. After a site revamp in the fourth quarter of 2014, we examine Thornburg Investment Management’s public investor site, a firm we first examined in June 2013.
Thornburg Investment Management, headquartered in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was founded in 1982 and is an independent firm with $61 billion AUM. The asset management company employs around 260 people and advises clients in portfolio management, most notably in the areas of fixed income, and U.S and global equity strategies.
- Fully responsive website
- Active on social media – particularly Twitter
- Unified branding, with a consistent color scheme, and a visually appealing design
- Usability – Intuitively designed, with updated fund product pages
- Navigation – Improved main menus with collapsible asset class menus
The navigation bar is intuitively designed and has informative flyouts that include private content, and collapsible asset class menus that help direct investors to funds of interest. Tabs load and dissolve quickly and feature a contrasting color selector to help guide investors as they browse.
Thornburg’s public homepage boasts a large rotating banner with bright, colorful imagery – a marked shift away from the old text-heavy design. The homepage features links to streaming promotional videos.

The firm’s fund profile pages are comprehensive and include many elements shared by top asset management firms in the Mutual Fund Monitor coverage group. Notably, the firm includes relevant commentary pieces for each fund, promoted prominently with images. The Performance tab includes a hypothetical growth chart with benchmark comparisons and mouse-over historical values. The Portfolio tab includes a breakdown of fund holdings, relevant charts and related commentaries; a Resources tab features all fund related-documents.

Thornburg’s Insights & Commentary section is divided into manager commentaries, research and videos. The Overview page features a promotional carousel highlighting three recent articles. Users can sort commentaries by equity and fixed income, but entries do not include representative images. Compared with other firms we cover, Thornburg offers a sizeable selection of embedded videos, however they would be much more usable if the firm offered sorting or filtering options.

Overall, Thornburg Investment Management offers users an improved investor website with responsive design and some added usability features. The firm’s homepage is much stronger, while the fund profile pages are noteworthy for their depth of organized data and relevant commentaries. The useful new sorting and filtering options on the homepage and product overview pages would be valuable to apply to the firm’s video Commentary section.
