The U.S. equity market is off to a strong start in 2013, with the DJIA and S&P 500 hitting new all-time highs in March. Yet retail trading volume among the major online brokerages remains depressed. It's clear that many individual investors are still gun shy after the financial crisis. This, in turn, is taking a toll on the brokerage industry's profits.

Ok, I made that up. There’s an interesting article in this month’s Harvard Business Review titled, 98% of Readers Love this Article (I guess I plagiarized too) that discusses the power of social norms. Essentially, the writer shows several instances from outside the financial sector where promoting actions taken by other people influences the activity of consumers.

Putnam recently unveiled plans to add a new feature to its Lifetime Income Analysis Tool that will help plan participants better understand their retirement needs and improve their retirement planning choices. The new interactive tool add-on will use participants’ health risks, habits and chronic conditions to project their health care expenses in retirement.
