A Closer Look at Retirement Mobile PDF Print E-mail

iphone ipad androidWhen it comes to mobile, Retirement plan providers have quietly been playing catch up. 61% of the firms tracked by our Retirement Plan Monitor research service now offer a mobile app. Among these firms, 85% offer iPhone apps while 54% offer Android apps. Despite the recent uptick in mobile development, only two of the 18 firms covered by Retirement Plan Monitor make iPad apps available.
 
Retirement Mobile App Features
Currently, the main function of retirement apps is viewing account information on-the-go. All of the apps (and mobile sites) reviewed in our recent Retirement Plan Monitor Mobile Apps report displayed an account balance, while 43% also listed a vested balance. Providers successfully illustrated this data, with 54% depicting it through a balance graph. Additionally, roughly 70% of apps featured a list of the securities in which an account is currently invested and/or at least one rate-of-return figure.

febIn February, a number of financial services firms across the industry introduced contests and sweepstakes to promote their products, online services and social media pages. Prizes included money, discounts, movie tickets and even vacation packages. February also saw Capital One complete the transition of ING Direct to Capital One 360  and Charles Schwab introduce a new commission-free ETF program.
 
Esurance Looks to the Final Frontier for Facebook “Likes”
Continuing the trend of financial firm’s incentivizing users to “Like” their Facebook page, Esurance introduced a new sweepstakes that offered two tickets to the Star Trek Into Darkness movie premiere and $2,500 spending money. Entering the contest opened up additional movie content on the page, like a trailer, a Vulcan avatar tool and downloadable posters, icons and wallpapers. In January, MassMutual promoted a contest in which users entered to win $20,000 towards college loan debt by “Liking” the firm’s Facebook page.

tabThe value of mobile apps to banking, credit card and brokerage customers is evident, and firms in these spaces have responded with innovative, forward-thinking offerings. Fund firms on the other hand have not been as quick to embrace mobile. Of the 26 firms covered by our Mutual Fund Monitor and Advisor Monitor research services, nearly half (46%) do not offer apps. Although this leaves the fund app marketplace relatively thin, fund firms have made mobile-friendly enhancements to their websites to improve the experience for clients on their mobile devices, particularly tablets such as the iPad.

Repression Obsession – Fund Firms Weigh In on Financial Repression PDF Print E-mail

allianzA growing chorus of financial commentators is raising the alarm about financial repression. While definitions of this term differ based on political stance, financial repression can be loosely defined as measures taken by a government to channel investments to themselves that would naturally be invested elsewhere. For example, efforts in an emerging market nation to stem capital outflows by implementing high currency reserve requirements would be considered financial repression. Recently, some experts have become concerned that repression may be applied in the U.S. to combat high debt levels. To address this concern, Advisor Monitor firms are releasing new educational resources and commentaries aimed at discussing this phenomenon and finding ways that advisors can explain the issue to clients.
