In recent updates to the iPhone and Android apps, Capital One added the ability to redeem No Hassle Rewards miles. This is the biggest mobile credit card rewards activity since the late summer, when American Express, Citi and Discover introduced the card industry’s first mobile credit card rewards redemptions.
Capital One may be months behind the aforementioned firms, but their new offering compares favorably to the earlier programs in the breadth of redemption options. The first wave of mobile rewards redemptions was very straightforward, e.g., just cash back, gift cards or merchandise. Capital One’s new rewards tools let clients redeem miles for statement credits, gift cards and cash back, as well as request transfers to other rewards accounts.
Capital One has done a good job adapting larger portions of its No Hassle Rewards site for mobile access. In addition to a solid array of redemption options, clients can view their miles balance, earning and redemption history, and details about the program such as their earn rate.
That said, these additions are still simplified online capabilities. We still hope to see firms add new features like Citi’s ThankYou Rewards app, which offers Best Buy in-store bar code scanning. The credit card industry continues to advance, but still has a ways to go to support true on-the-go rewards.
