July 2016 Trends & Highlights: Brexit, Mobile Changes and Scottrade

  • Firms React to Brexit  With the UK’s vote to leave the European Union, we saw firms reacting across the financial sphere. E*TRADE, Principal and TD Ameritrade added new pages of resources discussing worldwide ramifications. Vanguard, Merrill Edge and Principal included videos in their coverage, discussing potential market impacts and firm perspectives. We saw private site notifications from T. Rowe Price, Voya Financial and TD Ameritrade, all directing customers to Brexit analysis. Most other firms—including MassMutual, American Funds, Invesco, Wells Fargo and Fidelity—published press releases and commentaries promoted on public site homepages.
  • New Mobile App and Digital Payment Capabilities  Mobile app capabilities and digital payment services continued to grow through July. Ally Bank debit and credit cards are now compatible with both Android and Samsung Pay. Wells Fargo Wallet is now live for customers with the Wells Fargo mobile app for Android devices. Vanguard, TD Ameritrade and The Hartford mobile apps now support fingerprint authentication. State Farm allows users to pay bills and get insurance quotes within the mobile app without logging in. Esurance added photo claims documentation to its mobile app Report a Claim process.
  • Banks and Credit Card Companies Make Changes  Three firms released new credit card products this month. Citicards released the Costco Anywhere card, beginning a new co-branded relationship. Wells Fargo introduced the Cash Wise card and U.S. Bank released two cards—FlexPerks Gold and Cash 365. Chase overhauled its public credit card interface with updated navigation and redesigned two-column product pages that—one static column and one scrolling column. Bank of America redesigned all public site deposit pages with responsive design and updated navigation including a new menu that centralizes quick links into one location.


Scottrade Debuts Revamped Site

The firm’s new private site features simplified navigation with new flyout menus and greater consistency with the public site. The revamped site also includes an updated color scheme and improved product visibility.

Franklin Templeton Introduces Hypothetical Investor Stories

This new series examines how the firm’s funds can be used toward real-life milestones including getting married, buying a home and retiring. The firm displays each journey in an infographic with a timeline of expenses and life events.

TIAA for Apple Watch

TIAA is the first firm in the Retirement Plan Monitor coverage group to offer an Apple Watch app. The app displays the portfolio balance, retirement balance and year-to-date rate of return.

UBS Plans to Partner with NextShares

The firm plans to launch UBS-sponsored NextShares funds in 2017. The NextShares exchange-traded managed funds will be offered through its financial advisor network.
