The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, enacted in July, introduced a novel provision that has caught the attention of both families and brokerage firms: Trump Accounts. These tax-advantaged savings accounts for children will include a $1,000 government deposit for babies born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028; parents and others, including employers, will also have the ability to contribute to children’s accounts, which are meant to supplement 529s and other savings vehicles. While official regulations have not yet been announced, deposits will be invested in low-cost index funds intended to broadly track the U.S market.

Leading brokerage firms have covered this development with interest, producing primers and explanatory pieces for investors. J.P. Morgan, for example, published a Trump Accounts for Newborns: Information for Parents article, while Charles Schwab and SoFi released What to Know About Trump Accounts and A Primer for Parents on the Trump Accounts: Yay or Nay? articles, respectively. The J.P. Morgan piece includes a How You Open a Trump Account section that outlines potential mechanics, though it notes that official implementation details have not been finalized.

In addition to providing educational material, these firms no doubt see potential revenue opportunities in the form of this new investment product. Notably, even before the announcement of the product, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev announced that the firm stood ready to handle the potential program, expressing an eagerness to “kickstart investing journeys” for the 3.5 million Americans born each year. Tenev went on to candidly explain in a Bloomberg article that he sees the Trump Accounts as a prime opportunity to capture a generation of investors: “our best shot at getting them is at the beginning”.
