Prevention as Strategy: A Win-Win Model for P&C Insurance Carriers and Policyholders

Last updated on: October 20, 2025

Successful relationships are based on two things: trust and communication. The same principles apply when it comes to how insurers use digital tools to help policyholders prepare for risks and prevent losses.

With unpredictable climate patterns, increasing customer expectations and rising reconstruction costs, there is a clear need for carriers to integrate a “prepare and prevent” mindset into their branding. This prevention strategy not only positions insurance carriers as being part of a proactive partnership with customers, but also helps remove the idea that insurance only functions as reactive product.

In P&C Monitor‘s 2025 Smart Home Report, we found:

“Though most (76%) carriers in our coverage set promote connected device programs on the home insurance overview page… The lack of attention to connected home devices is in stark contrast to the ubiquitous and extensive range of promotions we see for telematics programs from insurers in our coverage set.”

Earlier this year, we also explored how carriers improved engagement through enhanced digital touchpoints, value-added content, discount promotions and improved communications. Here are some different strategies that insurance carriers have employed to take these prevention strategy trends a step further by incorporating a “prepare and prevent” mindset in promoting home protection and disaster mitigation tools:

Advertising and Education

Liberty Mutual grants its policyholders free access to the Liberty+ Microsite, which functions as a personalized resource hub designed for individual homeowners needs. The page displays home protection content and value-added services, and uses interactive guides and questionnaires to encourage policyholders to view risk prevention, like home maintenance and safety measures, not just as frilly add-ons, but as essentials to protecting their homes. This strategy is a great example of how insurers can encourage customers to look at these products not just as savings tools, but also as risk risk-reduction strategies.

Disaster Readiness:

USAA‘s Natural Disaster Center page provides an intuitive framework for preparation and recovery by highlighting hurricane season readiness, followed by interactive modules with icons ascribed to different perils that guide users through “plan ahead,” “stay safe,” and “recover phases.” The content and design on this landing page are great examples of creating a digital experience that feels educational and situationally responsive rather than transactional

Communication and Alerts:

Nationwide’s policyholder site Weather Alerts Dashboard and Allstate’s mobile app extend proactive engagement by allowing users to add up to five zip codes for hail and wildfire notifications. These tool transforms real-time weather data into an active safety measure, which can help reinforce trust and fostering a sense of relevance beyond billing or claims interactions.

These are just a few examples that illustrate a broader shift in P&C’s dynamic UX front. From reactive claims to proactive protection, integrating trust and communication into smart home product positioning creates a win-win dynamic: lower risks for carriers and greater security for customers.
