Commercial Insurance: Digital Platforms Are a New Difference Maker for P&C Firms

Last updated on: November 20, 2025

The P&C insurance industry faces increasing competitive compression, with digital experiences and capabilities growing more similar across carriers. Commercial insurance lines present a clear opportunity to break from this pattern. Commercial insurance carriers that use competitive intelligence research to turn these portals into strategic engagement tools can establish a meaningful competitive advantage. Investment in these oft-neglected platforms leads to higher customer satisfaction, positive word-of-mouth recommendations in the small business community, and higher retention rates.

To that end, Corporate Insight recently introduced Commercial Insurance Monitor, a competitive intelligence research service tracking the digital experience across commercial insurance lines. The first report from Commercial Insurance Monitor examines the desktop customer portals from 20 leading carriers of small commercial lines. The report focuses on site design, content, and value-added features while detailing core customer journeys, giving subscribers the first comprehensive view of the competitive landscape and the areas primed for strategic improvement.

Below we preview two key findings from this initial report. Commercial Insurance Monitor subscribers can access the full report in the CI client portal:

Less than a quarter of insurers permit business owners to complete coverage changes online

Commercial insurance carriers lag when it comes to digital self-service capabilities for policy management, with only FLIP, The Hartford, Next Insurance and Thimble enabling business owners to make policy changes online. Meanwhile, the remaining carriers require policyholders to submit forms, contact agents or make phone calls for policy changes, potentially creating friction during critical business moments when users need to adjust their coverage quickly. This gap represents a significant competitive differentiation opportunity, as business owners increasingly expect the same level of self-service control over their insurance policies that they have with other business services. Carriers that invest in online policy change capabilities can position themselves as innovators in a market where such functionality remains rare, potentially improving customer satisfaction and operational efficiency while reducing agent workload for routine policy modifications.

The Hartford’s Business Owner’s Policy Change page allows users to easily change policies through a series of dropdown menus in a three-step flow. First, users select the effective date change using a calendar dropdown menu and select Continue. Next, they select the new liability limit from another dropdown. Finally, a green Updated icon appears next to the revised policy, and users must select the Save or Cancel button to finalize changes. Users have the option to edit multiple policies before selecting Save.

Next Insurance offers a Coverage Customization tool that requires users to select their desired limits and deductibles from a series of dropdown menus. Additional coverages located in the last section of the tool require interested users to use toggle switches, which activate a dropdown list of limits. Upon completion, users click a Check Price button that opens a lightbox asking them to confirm their coverage changes and listing the adjusted coverage.

Most carriers allow business owners to submit a certificate of insurance online

For business owners, the ease of doing business with a carrier and its overall quality of customer service can supersede premium affordability as the key building blocks to a long-term relationship with an insurance carrier. A pivotal aspect of that “ease of doing business” component is the ability to quickly generate a certificate of insurance (COI) online, a capability that many insurers in this report offer their policyholders. Further, several provide homepage quick links to expedite the process.

State Farm, for example, features a homepage Quick Links sidebar section with a Create a Certificate of Insurance
option.

Liberty Mutual provides a dedicated Certificate of Insurance page where policyholders can view past COIs in a filterable, sortable table. They can also initiate the process to generate a new COI from the Add a Certificate button (1), which loads a Create Certificate For lightbox (2), prompting users to select the relevant policy number and type of certificate they require. The lightbox also includes the option to add a certificate holder via a checkbox. Next, users can click a Create Certificate of Insurance button to instantaneously generate a certificate in PDF form in a separate window.
