New Platforms for Sustainable Investing Focus on the E in ESG
ESG investing remains a popular (and in some states controversial) way to invest, particularly for younger investors. Surveys show that Gen Z and Millennial investors care about ESG factors, with a particular emphasis on the E, environmental factors. To attract these young and environmentally minded investors, fintech companies are offering new retail investing opportunities, like ESG-focused portfolios, with some firms even offering dedicated platforms that focus exclusively on green and ethical investments. These platforms curate portfolios based on sustainability metrics, enabling retail investors to align their financial goals with environmental impact. Whether due to their adherence to ESG criteria or direct investments in renewable energy projects, these online platforms enable more users than ever to participate in sustainable investing. Firms hoping to attract and retain Gen Z and Millennials can mirror these green investment options.
Below, as part of our ongoing research into fintech firms, we examine how some are appealing to these younger investors with green investing options.
Acorns’ ESG Portfolio
Take Acorns for example, an app that specializes in helping users invest small amounts of money into diversified portfolios. This feature makes it easy for users not as familiar with investing to get started without needing a large initial sum. The app recently built in ESG portfolios, composed of ETFs that invest in companies rated for their approach on environmental and social issues.

By allowing its users to easily select sustainable ETFs, fintech platforms such as Acorns empower retail investors to make green investing decisions that reflect users’ values. By aligning with the priorities of today’s investors and providing access to brokerage tools, fintech companies cater to both users’ ethical considerations and financial goals. This values-driven investment philosophy has became incredibly important in recent years, with purpose-driven Gen Z entering the investment market, as 45% of Gen Z now holds at least one investment product.
IMPACT by Interactive Brokers
Some individual investors prefer to further customize their portfolios with what matters to them. Companies like IMPACT by Interactive Brokers offer self-directed investing options that allow users to align their investments with their personal values, such as emissions reduction or clean water. The platform’s IMPACT score shows investors how closely their portfolio aligns with their values. Users are able to highlight investments that support ocean life or consumer safety, for example, and flag companies that do not align with their values due to animal testing or high water usage, among other customizable factors.

These platforms empower users to have a more direct influence on the causes they care about while still pursuing financial growth. Eighty percent of Gen Z stated that when making investment decisions sustainability is a big concern for them. By offering greater flexibility, these platforms cater to the growing demand for socially responsible and sustainable investing.
Rise of ESG-focused Robo-Advisors
Fintechs with automated investment platforms that prioritize sustainability and green investments are becoming increasingly popular with retail investors. These fintech tools allow investors to build portfolios focused on renewable energy, waste reduction, or sustainable agriculture, offering automated portfolio management with a green focus. When it comes to engaging younger generations, robo-advisors have an advantage in gaining a dedicated user base. According to FINRA, 40% of Gen Z investors report using robo-advisors as part of their investment strategies.
Robo-advisors such as Wealthfront and Betterment excel at providing portfolios tailored to individual risk tolerance and ESG goals. These platforms use sophisticated algorithms to select investments in companies that meet environmental, social, and governance criteria, making it easier for users to invest in line with their values without needing in-depth knowledge of the underlying assets. These platforms often also provide user-friendly features such as automated rebalancing and low fees, making ESG investing more accessible and efficient for a broad range of individual investors.
Enhancing Social Engagement
By educating users about sustainability and rewarding eco-friendly behaviors or investment choices, fintechs help promote environmental awareness while growing their retail investor base for green investments. Implementing ESG initiatives helps fintech companies build a strong reputation for ethical and sustainable business practices. This can lead to increased customer loyalty, as studies show that consumers have become more conscious of the ethical implications of their financial decisions. Gen Z is especially concerned about ethical practices in investing, with sustainability and social responsibility being significant factors in their investment decisions.
For example, a Stanford survey found that 83% of Gen Z and millennial respondents actively consider the Environmental portion of ESG performance of companies when investing. Additionally, the World Economic Forum highlighted that Gen Z’s preference for sustainable investment options influences not only their peers but also older generations in prioritizing ethical considerations. One example of this effect lies within Aspiration, an online banking company with a mission to “use finance as a force for good.” Users can invest in vetted companies through Aspiration’s Redwood Fund, plant trees through their use of their debit card and more.

Overall, Aspiration offers banking products that avoid financing fossil fuels, often appealing to customers who prioritize environmental impact in their financial choices. This approach has cultivated a loyal customer base that values transparency and sustainability, as consumers increasingly choose financial institutions aligned with their personal values.
Leveraging Sustainable Investments for Competitive Advantage in Mobile Fintech
In a crowded market, ESG can be a key differentiator for fintech companies. By offering green products and services aligned with ethical and sustainable values, fintech firms can attract a niche yet rapidly growing segment of retail investors who prioritize ESG in their investing choices. These offerings make green investments more appealing and accessible, promoting financial inclusion and sustainability.
Despite the backlash, investors across the board are increasingly looking for companies that prioritize ESG factors. Many institutional investors are now requiring companies to disclose their ESG practices to ensure long-term sustainability. In the past few years, we have seen companies with strong ESG performance often attract more investment and can have lower capital costs. For fintech companies, prioritizing ESG is not just about meeting investor or regulatory expectations but about embedding sustainability, ethics, and good governance into their business models. This focus on ESG has lead to more investment opportunities, better financial terms, increased customer trust, and a competitive edge in an increasingly sustainability-conscious market.
By providing these tools, fintechs make it easier for users—especially Gen Z—to make decisions that match their values, especially in the sustainability space. Gen Z cares about ethical practices and wants to see transparency in the companies they support. Giving clients user-friendly tools to access this kind of information builds trust and loyalty while helping fintechs stand out as leaders in responsible investment. Through these innovations—users feel empowered, and companies build stronger connections with a rapidly growing, environmentally conscious generation.
